Words matter.
So does what happens to them in someone else's hands.

I’m Michelle DeVries, founder and lead editor of The Ninth Bell. I created The Ninth Bell for the kind of editorial work I believe in: careful, collaborative work that strengthens what’s on the page while preserving the voice, purpose, and perspective that made it worth creating.

Experience Shaped by the Work Itself

Michelle DeVries is an editor, writer, and publishing professional whose work spans educational publishing, curriculum development, acquisitions and developmental editing, and content and communications. She holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and English with an emphasis in Creative Writing—a combination that left her painfully meticulous, relentlessly curious, and occasionally hilariously awkward.

Over the past seven years, Michelle has written or managed more than thirty textbooks and curriculum programs across history, social studies, and geography. As an acquiring and developmental editor, she has worked on educational children’s books, historical fiction, multicultural nonfiction, and biographies, helping authors strengthen structure, narrative, instructional value, and audience engagement.

Her experience extends beyond books and curriculum to technical and instructional materials, literary publishing, and content for websites, marketing, and communications. She has contributed to a published anthology exploring the intersection of pop culture and philosophy and volunteered in local schools, using stories, folktales, fairy tales, and tabletop role-playing games to introduce students to logic, ethics, and critical thinking.

After years of working across these different forms of publishing and content, Michelle founded The Ninth Bell to bring the different threads of her career together in one place: a love of language and story, an interest in how people learn and communicate, and a belief that editing is at its best when it helps a writer’s intentions come through more clearly rather than imposing someone else’s.

At heart, Michelle is fascinated by how people learn, why stories matter, and the many ways a well-placed question can change how someone sees the world.

Why the Ninth Bell?

The name The Ninth Bell is a quiet nod to a fantasy series that has stayed with me for years and to the idea that a whole is made meaningful by all of its parts.

The strongest work isn't created by keeping only what is comfortable, polished, or easy. Complexity, tension, uncertainty, and contradiction can be just as essential as clarity, connection, and resolution. Good editorial work means understanding the purpose each piece serves: what should be strengthened, what should be questioned, what should be refined, and what should be left intact.

That idea sits at the heart of The Ninth Bell. The goal isn't to make every piece of writing the same. It's to help every part work together so the whole rings true.

Beyond the Page

Away from work, Michelle can usually be found reading, writing, tending an overly ambitious garden, practicing archery or aerial acrobatics, swimming, biking, playing video games and Dungeons & Dragons, or enthusiastically consuming anything bread-related. She lives with her husband, two daughters, a dog, four cats, and two chickens—and remains hopeful that the universe will eventually permit the addition of a chameleon named Roger.
